Your podcast’s lifeblood is the audience. We’ve demonstrated how they can be a source of revenue from buying your products / services to advertisers purchasing a spot on your podcast. Therefore, one of the most important tasks for your podcast management and marketing is to gain a continuous flow of new and loyal listeners.
We’ve covered the basic ways you can do this in a previous blog post, but that doesn’t mean that this is an exhausted list. There are lots of ways to attract new audiences to your podcasts. The most effective is to make it go viral.
Viral podcasts are those which have been shared numerous times across the web and via other marketing platforms (i.e. word of mouth). Generally, only a few podcasts ever make it to such a prestigious stage because it is very difficult to predict what will go viral and what will not. Podcasts are even harder to get to go viral because they aren’t shared in the same manner as a Tweet or blog post.
Yet that doesn’t mean that you can’t make your podcast go viral. Here are five tips to give you the upper hand and the best chance of producing a viral podcast.
1. Encompass Your Podcast With Video Or Images
While we like listening to podcasts, humans also require a visual reminder to really engage with the content. Text is not the best promoter as it is slow to read and can bore the reader. However, by using a video or strong graphic you can capture the imagination of the audience.
Videos work better than images, but are more expensive and time consuming. However, videos can be hosted on YouTube which gives a boost to your podcast’s reach.
Search engines still rely on text to index their pages. While the focus has moved away from keyword stuffed pages, having a content that can be linked to a certain topic is still highly beneficial and searchable by Google. So for every episode that you record, create an accompanying descriptive article where you explain what the episode is about, what conclusions were drawn from it and who the guest was.
In the blog, include a podcast download and live listen option and watch how people interact with the page by listening to the episode and sharing it across social media.
3. Email Marketing
Your audience will run a pretty busy life. They aren’t just sitting around waiting for you to write, record and publish another podcast. Because of this, life gets in the way of listening to your podcast. Therefore, you must give your audience a nudge, through an email marketing list, to go to your website / iTunes and download the latest episode.
Email marketing is highly effective because it is permissible and nearly 80% of all email users like receiving promotional content via their email accounts.
There are numerous podcast audiences addicted to this social media site. According to statistics, in 2013, traffic on Reddit jumped 83% to 731 million unique visitors. This can help you receive a lot of attention even if you only market to a small proportion of these users.
While Reddit doesn’t have the same number of users as Facebook – they still have a good number of highly dedicated members. Reddit users are more likely to repost, comment, mark up or communicate with you than a Facebook or Twitter audience.
5. Ask For It
At the end of each episode you should be asking the audience to share your content. This helps you develop strong ties with them; they are in the perfect position to share your podcast to their peers. A recommendation from a trusted friend will grow your reputation with audiences and attract more shares.
Having your content become viral is not easy. However, there are numerous ways you can increase the chances that this will happen through clever marketing tactics and a bit of luck.
